Thalassologia: The Blue Humanities in film

31 October, 2024

Starting in November, the JRAAS team and the Digital Lab will be launching a cinema cycle centred entirely around Blue Humanities, in collaboration with different institutions, with a specific focus on the ocean. Given our ongoing research and database development in this field, it felt only natural to align our new cinema cycle with our research.

Blue Humanities explores humanity’s deep connections to the ocean through cultural, historical, and environmental lenses. This cinema cycle aims to highlight how the ocean shapes human experience, identity, and imagination. The selected films, drawn from one of our curated databases, showcase how the ocean is much more than just a mere geographical space, as it emerges as a powerful cultural force that has shaped storytelling, art, and history across time.

The first session features Nyad (2023), directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, with an introduction by Fátima Vieira at Casa Comum, on November 11, 2024 at 18h00 (Casa Comum)

The second session features The Abyss (1989), directed by James Cameron (2023), with an introduction by Luciano Moreira and Filipe Pires at Planetário Porto, on November 24, 2024 at 15h00 (Planetário do Porto).
