Description
Macao was the first Western colony in China since around 1577 until the founding of Hong Kong in 1841-42. Especially after the arrival of the East India Company in China in 1700, Anglo-Portuguese diplomatic relations became an important part of the Portuguese and British presences and activities in Asia, namely in Japan (1613-23), both as allies and rivals. In 19th-century India, Portuguese colonial coastal settlements like Goa, Damão and Diu were surrounded by the British colony.
Since November 2023, this strand analyzes English-language (orientalist travel, historical and fictional) representations of Macao, Hong Kong and other Asian regions as well as (post-)colonial Anglo-Portuguese relations in Asia, especially in India and the Pearl River Delta, since the 17th century.
